Why Showering Every Day After 65 Could Be Doing More Harm Than Help

For years, daily showers have been viewed as a basic sign of cleanliness. Many of us were taught from a young age that bathing every day is essential for good health. But once you pass 65, this routine may no longer be as helpful as it seems. For many older adults, showering every single day can quietly create more problems than benefits.

Aging skin needs different care

As the body ages, the skin goes through noticeable changes. After 60, it becomes thinner, more delicate, and prone to dryness. The oil glands slow down, producing less natural moisture, and the skin’s protective barrier weakens over time. Daily showers—especially when paired with hot water and standard soaps—can wash away the limited oils the skin still has.

The result is often dry, itchy, irritated skin and small cracks that may go unnoticed. These tiny openings can allow bacteria to enter, increasing the risk of infections that older immune systems may struggle to fight.

Too much washing upsets the skin’s balance
