1. Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding
What it may feel like: Spotting between periods, after intercourse, or bleeding after menopause.
Many women brush off abnormal bleeding, especially if it’s light. But any bleeding outside your normal menstrual cycle should raise a red flag—particularly postmenopausal bleeding or bleeding after sex.
2. Unusual Vaginal Discharge
What it may feel like: Watery, foul-smelling, or tinged with blood.
Changes in vaginal discharge can occur for many benign reasons, like infections or hormonal shifts. However, if your discharge suddenly changes in color, smell, or consistency, it may signal a deeper issue—including cervical cancer.
Look for discharge that:
- Has a strong, unpleasant odor
- Appears pink, brown, or bloody outside your period
- Is persistent and doesn’t improve with typical treatments
3. Pain During Intercourse
What it may feel like: Discomfort, pressure, or pain during or after sex.
Painful intercourse—especially if it’s new or worsening—can be linked to various gynecological conditions. But when it happens along with bleeding or unusual discharge, it’s time to consult a doctor.
This symptom may be a sign that the cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or that there is inflammation around the cervix.
4. Pelvic or Lower Back Pain
What it may feel like: Persistent aching or cramping in the pelvis, lower back, or legs.
Chronic pelvic or back pain—especially if it’s dull and consistent—can signal advanced stages of cervical cancer. It may be caused by the tumor pressing on nerves or surrounding organs.
